Geoff and Marcia travelled to Lord Howe Island in February 2023. They had such a great time that they are already eager to return. Check out their feedback and some great tips on what to see, do and expect on the unique Aussie island.

Hello Laura,
Marcia and I had a wonderful time, Lord Howe Island was great!
The 80 minute flight to LHI was very good, minimal check-in time.
Gaye from Somerset Apartments greeted us at the airport, which was nice, she gave us a bit of an island tour before going to Somerset a good orientation.
Somerset Apartments are centrally located – actually a great position – and are nice and clean, with a really good bed. The kitchen is equipped with all the necessary electrical appliances and the bathroom / toilet has been recently renovated. The gardens around Somerset are really a tropical paradise.

There are only 9 km of roads on the island and we found that walking everywhere was the way to go. Push bikes can be hired for A$75 per week, but we found this unnecessary.
As you are well aware, there are many really good walks on the island and we did most of them. I climbed Mt Gower with the guided group and this was a top day out – not real cheap at A$200 pp plus A$20 pp for the bus, but worth it.
The two shops were well stocked with most things that we needed – mainly food – and the butcher had good meat, fresh fish and a great deli. As expected, everything is somewhat more expensive than the mainland .
There are several very good places to eat out – mainly the Anchorage Restaurant, The Museum Cafe, The Bowls Club and The Golf Club. Snacks are also available at the Pub.
We went on the round the island bus trip, which was really informative and also went on the glass bottom boat – clear water, great coral and I had a good time snorkelling.

Environmentally : The island is very clean and the residents have terrific civic price. There are no electrical poles and wires (all electrical is underground), very few street lights (no light pollution) and no street advertising / billboards. Most of the electrical power for the island is generated with a fairly new A$12 million solar farm. The dump is a high-tech 90 – 95 % efficient recycling plant. ULP 91 petrol is A$4 per litre, soon to be A$4.50 (though there are barely any cars).
The residents of LHI are very friendly and cooperative.
On day 8, Gaye drove us to the airport – with its new A$8 million runway – and we had a great flight back to the Gold Coast.
For January, the weather on Lord Howe Island was very good with an ocean water temperature of 25 C.
Laura, thanks for organising our trip.
We hope to return!
Best wishes and kind regards ,
Geoff & Marcia, February 2023.
