What to expect on The Ghan

This iconic train dates back to 1878, when it first started running out of Port Augusta. In 1923, The Ghan was officially named after the ‘Afghan Express’, a nickname that railwaymen had for the passenger train. It wasn’t until 1929 that The Ghan made its way to Alice Springs and the Red Centre. By 2004, the track was finally extended all the way to Darwin in 2004.
