Northern Territory Darwin to Alice Springs Self-Drive with Flights – 14 days

This great Northern Territory road trip takes you from the tropical Top End to the stunning Red Centre.

This two-week trip maps out all the best places to see, like Kakadu, Litchfield National Park, Katherine, Tennant Creek, Alice Springs, Kings Canyon and Uluru (Ayers Rock).

No payment is required to submit an online booking request, but your booking is pending and no place is being held. Your booking status will be advised when you hear from our travel consultants. Bookings are normally actioned within 24 hours – Monday to Friday.

SELF-DRIVE ITINERARY:

Day 1: Arrive Darwin
Arrive in Darwin and pick up your vehicle before spending the rest of the day experiencing the relaxed atmosphere and local highlights Darwin has to offer. Darwin is a modern city whose flair and charm is a real surprise to people who aren’t expecting it. Visit some of its great attractions, and great eateries or café’s. Well-attended markets and sensational sunsets cap off a great day.

Day 2: Darwin to Litchfield
Travel the 140 km from Darwin to Litchfield National Park. Litchfield offers year-round swimming amongst attractive and easily accessible surrounds. Characterised by a spring fed Plateau. Unlike Kakadu and other spots in the top end, waterfalls flow all year round at Litchfield. There are number of swimming options including the stunning Buley Rockhole and Wangi Falls.

Day 3 : Litchfield to Kakadu
An early start traveling from Litchfield to Kakadu, stopping off and exploring some of the scenery and attractions around the Mary River Wetlands. Recognised as one of the most populated biomass regions in the world, the Mary River Wetlands offers stunning wildlife and unique cruises including the popular Jumping Croc Cruise. Continue your journey into Kakadu and check in to your accommodation before heading out to explore the East Alligator escarpment and aboriginal rock art at Ubirr Rock. Time your visit to Ubirr to watch the incredible sunset over the wetlands from the Ubirr escarpment. – One of the great experiences. (Bus Groups are not allowed at Ubirr for sunset)

Day 4: Explore Kakadu National Park:
A full day exploring some of the main attractions that make Kakadu National Park exceptional. Take a scenic flight over the escarpment (extra cost), Explore the rock art around Nourlangie including a nearby rock shelter where there is evidence of occupation stretching back 20,000 years. After Nourlangie make the drive to Cooinda and its beautiful wetlands.

Day 5: Kakadu to Katherine
Another great day exploring the attractions in the southern region of Kakadu at your own pace. Consider an early morning Yellow Water Cruise, (extra cost) before exploring some of the great walks and swimming holes in the south of the park and on the way to Katherine. Along the way consider a detour to historic Pine Creek or stop over for a swim at picturesque Edith Falls before driving to Katherine.

Day 6: Around Katherine (Katherine Gorge)
Located 30km from Katherine, the gorge is the most visited landmark in the region. Katherine Gorge is carved through the Arnhemland plateau and is a continuous gorge, running along perpendicular fault lines that are separated during the dry season by rock bars. The spectacle of the river, shear cliffs and rock art make this an excellent place to explore. Photos do not do this area justice.

Day 7: Katherine to Tennant Creek
Today you begin driving the Stuart Highway, 112km from Katherine is the wonderful oasis and beautiful spring-fed swimming holes of Mataranka. Great spot to stop, relax and soak up the atmosphere before you continue south and a dramatic change in landscape. From here on you’ll experience the enormity and hostility of the Australian landscape. Vast stretches of road cut through the unforgiving surrounds with the occasional pub and roadside stops offering true outback character and a taste of the hardships associated with local history. On arrival into Tennant Creek, you’ll find a variety of experiences including a mining museum with underground mine tours.

Day 8: Tennant Creek to Alice Springs
Continue your journey to Alice Springs. Along the way you will come across one of Outback Australia’s iconic landmarks the Devils Marbles. Depending on what time you arrive into Alice begin exploring some of the many attractions within Alice Springs. Alice’s attractions can be explored as 6 separate discovery trails based on themes. Choose and explore one or more of these themes depending on your interests.

Day 9: West MacDonnell Ranges
A free day to relax and explore more of Alice Springs or alternatively take the opportunity to explore the spectacular gorges and gaps of the West MacDonnell Ranges at your own pace. The road is bitumen all the way till Ormiston Gorge and Glen Helen Lodge. Choose from as many of the 9 attractions that you can fit in depending on your fitness level and interests.

Day 10: Alice Springs to Wattarka (Kings Canyon)
Spend part of today driving the 450km from Alice Springs to Kings Canyon at whatever time of day suits. Your departure time will depend on the attractions you want to revisit and what you want to see from these two locations and along the Lasseter and Stuart Highways. On arrival in Kings Canyon begin exploring parts of the dramatic cliff walls of Kings Canyon with the stunning impact of an Outback Sunset.

Day 11: Wattarka (Kings Canyon) to Uluru (Ayers Rock)
An adventurous morning exploring the stunning rock walls and breathtaking scenery of the Kings Canyon Rim Walk (one of the great walks) before driving the 300km from Kings Canyon to Uluru. Your departure time will depend on the attractions you want to see from these two locations and along the Luritja Rd and Lasseter Highway. In the afternoon arrive at Yulara and begin exploring breathtaking Uluru.

Day 12: Exploring Uluru – Kata Tjuta National Park
A magnificent day exploring the Kata-Tjuta National Park. Spend the time driving or walking around the base of the rock and exploring the many aspects of this amazing monolith. Located 50 km from Ayers Rock along a sealed road is Kata Tjuta (The Olgas) a collection of weathered red domes that many believe are even more spectacular than the famous rock. A trip to Uluru Kata-Tjuta National Park is also about experiencing and understanding its cultural and spiritual significance.

Day 13: Uluru – Alice Springs
An early wake-up to experience sunrise and explore any of the attractions, walks or guided tours you may be interested in around Uluru. A peaceful 1 hr camel ride over big red sand dunes, a Guided Aboriginal tour at the base of Uluru are just 2 of the many options. After completing your morning adventure begin the 450km drive back to Alice Springs. Your departure time will depend on the attractions you want to see from these two locations and along the Lasseter and Stuart Highways.

Day 14: Depart Alice Springs
Farewell Alice Springs as your drop your car at the airport and fly home.
