The tropical island is just 8km, or an easy 20-minute ferry ride, off the coast from Townsville. This week-long escape gives you plenty of time to discover the secluded beaches, bushland hikes and wonderful wildlife of the nature-lovers paradise.

Two-thirds of Magnetic Island is national park and the island is a gateway to the Great Barrier Reef within the World Heritage protected area. The pristine island also has 23 gold sandy beaches, is home to Northern Australia’s largest population of koalas and has 25km of scenic bush walks. From August to October is the best time to spot Humpback whales and between November to January is normally when turtles are spotted laying their eggs.

In addition to the natural wonders, there are great local restaurants serving international cuisine and the island’s famous seafood, fun bars and a wonderful bus service that operates frequently every day and makes it really easy to get around if you opt not to hire a car.
