Spirit of Queensland Rail Journey with Sightseeing – 16 Days

This independent holiday includes rail travel, hotel accommodation and day tours. Designed for relaxation, the Spirit of Queensland redefines the modern rail travel experience with a comfortable and convenient way to access spectacular holiday destinations such as the Great Barrier Reef, the Whitsundays, Townsville and Cairns.

Starting in Brisbane, an easy-going hop-on hop-off bus tour takes you to the top attractions. From Bundaberg, prepare yourself for an unforgettable trip and jump aboard the pink LARC – an amphibious craft that will take you for a ride across deserted sandy beaches and pristine estuaries. In Townsville a scenic tour awaits and no northern Queensland trip would be complete without a Great Barrier Reef cruise. The highlights continue with Cape Tribulation and Daintree Forest day tour, as well as a ride on the famous Kuranda Railway. Plus you get to kick back and take in the stunning surrounds of Cairns on a 7-night stay!

(overnight train in comfortable Queensland rail seat.)

Depart Townsville at 9.48 am. Arrive Cairns at 4.30 pm.

Brisbane Hop on Hop off Bus
Riding aboard a hop-on hop-off bus, explore Brisbane top attractions and hear informative commentary about the sights while on board. Set your own pace to go sightseeing at your choice of landmarks including the heritage-listed City Hall and discover cultural sites such as the Gallery of Modern Art and Queensland Art Gallery. When a stop interests you, simply disembark from the open-top double-decker bus.

Southern Great Barrier Reef Cruise on the “Larc” Boat from Bundaberg
For a trip you will never forget, jump aboard the pink LARC – an amphibious craft that will take you for a ride across deserted sandy beaches and pristine estuaries as you make your way to the isolated Bustard Head Lighthouse located within Eurimbula National Park. This is Queensland's only operating Lighthouse open to the public! You'll hear the tales of tragedy and triumph as early white settlers and lighthouse keepers struggled to tame this remote wilderness. You will have a guided tour in the light keeper's cottage, now a museum of artefacts and light station memorabilia. You will see some of the prolific wildlife that inhabits the area and gasp in awe at the spectacular panoramic view from the balcony of the historic Bustard Head Lighthouse. And on the way home, you can experience the thrill of sand boarding down the towering dunes of Middle Island. The LARCs (Lighter Amphibious Resupply Cargo Vessels) are named in honour of Sir Joseph Banks and Dr Daniel Carl Solander, the two eminent botanists who accompanied Lieutenant James Cook aboard the Endeavour on their voyage of discovery. Full day tour includes morning tea, lunch and an Aussie Billy tea.

Townsville Scenic Tour.

Green Island and Great Barrier Reef Cruise from Cairns
Green Island is a beautiful 6000 year-old coral cay located in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park – a premier world heritage site and one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. Aboard Great Adventures’ fast catamaran from Cairns, your journey to the Great Barrier Reef takes only 45 minutes! Surrounded by reef filled with diverse marine life, and home to a unique rainforest environment, Green Island awaits to provide you with a memorable holiday experience.
Take part in all the activities that the island has to offer or relax on the beach and let your day unfold in this tropical paradise. Stroll through magical rainforest, laze on white coral sand beaches, swim, dive or snorkel …There are a wide range of optional activities to experience on Green Island. Scuba dive, join a snorkel excursion, and even walk underwater with Seawalker helmet diving. For an exhilarating top-side perspective of the reef, there’s parasailing and scenic helicopter flights too! There’s even the Marineland Melanesia Crocodile Habitat with daily crocodile shows.

Cape Tribulation and Daintree Forest day Tour from Cairns
This Daintree and Cape Tribulation Tour is one of Tropical Queensland’s most popular day tours. On the spectacular Cape Tribulation Tour, you will have the chance to explore one of the worlds ancient tropical rainforests, dating as far back as 180 million years! Check out some Australian wildlife native to the area, including crocodiles on a wildlife spotting River Cruise, and the breathtaking Cape Tribulation.

Leaving Cairns, we head straight into the Daintree National Park to meet our 1 hour guided crocodile and wildlife spotting river cruise. Fully guided by a local biologist and run by an Eco Accredited River Cruise Company, you will be provided expert knowledge about the region and its native inhabitants. The river is abundant with wildlife so be on the lookout for Salt Water Crocodiles, reptiles, pythons, butterflies and native birds. Back on the safety of land, we go further into the Daintree Rainforest, the deeper we venture the more we can discover, your guide will show you some intriguing features of the jungle, including the endangered Cassowary. Arriving at the Marrdja Boardwalk, we begin a 1 hour guided rainforest walk. Your guide will have you fascinated as you explore the peculiar but beautiful ancient plant life and the freshwater streams. We then head to Cape Tribulation where you will be treated to a delicious picnic lunch (additional $17 per person). After lunch, you’ll have time to explore the Cape Tribulation Beach and surrounds. From Cape Tribulation it’s onto the top of the Alexandra Range for a breath-taking view over the Daintree Rainforest, Coastal Hinterland and Daintree River. It is then off to explore Mossman Gorge and have some and afternoon tea.

Kuranda Railway Tour from Cairns

Twelve hundred species of flowering plants, eight hundred different rainforest trees, spectacular orchids, strangler figs, exotic palms and hundreds of unique creatures inhabit this lush green world.

Now imagine all that natural wonder so close that you can almost touch it, your senses alive with the heady organic fragrance and untamed sounds of the dense rainforest. That’s what it’s like aboard Kuranda Scenic Railway as you unwind your way through a tropical paradise framed by rugged mountains with waterfalls tumbling forever into deep ravines. Being one with the rainforest as you undertake an unforgettable journey is what makes Kuranda Scenic Railway such a must-do experience.

This famous railway winds its way on a journey from Cairns to Kuranda, the village in the rainforest, with Freshwater situated along the line with views of the surrounding mountains. Rising from sea level to 327 metres, the journey to Kuranda passes spectacular waterfalls and into the stunning Barron Gorge. The journey includes an English commentary and all passengers receive a commentary companion which includes information on the history of the railway’s construction, a trip map and a map of Kuranda. Upon reaching Kuranda village, a rich assortment of interesting attractions and unique shopping experiences awaits you.
